The Stony Brook men’s basketball team fell in the regular season opener to the Maryland Terrapins by a final score of 76-61 at Nassau Coliseum Friday night.
Last season, the Stony Brook men’s basketball team faced an uphill battle the likes of which they had not seen in years. Critics and reporters did not give the Seawolves the time of day, ranking them seventh out of nine teams in the America East preseason rankings just before the 2016-2017 season kicked off.
Play was initially slow and some easy opportunities were not converted, but the Seawolves quickly adjusted and dominated the remainder of the match against the Dolphins, winning 92-62.
At one time down 17 with 16:30 remaining, Stony Brook managed to cut the deficit to three with 8:41 left to play, but it was the closest Stony Brook came to taking the lead.
Comeback wins and second half efforts are a testament to the team’s mentality. Rather than focusing on the big picture, Boals and his team have a one-game at a time mentality.

The game-winning shot solidified a 72-70 victory over Albany. The Seawolves improve to 2-0 in conference play and are tied for first in the America East Conference standings.
