Jerrold L. Stein, the associate vice president for Student Affairs and dean of students, is retiring at the conclusion of this summer after an incredible 38 years of service to Stony Brook University.

Responsibility and power: two things needed to make a great leader. Stony Brook is home to many honorable and worthy leaders in administration, but I think some have forgotten that leadership is not a job of isolation. Now, I’m not here to call anybody out, *cough* President Stanley *cough*, but I would say that good leadership should provide a sense of presence and connection among the community. A good leader, in my mind, is someone that wants to truly represent their people, and right now, Stanley seems to avoid contact with the student body like the plague.
Anna Lubitz is well known on campus. She is President of the Pre-Veterinary Society. She ran for Homecoming queen last year. She was a member of The Spirit of Stony Brook Marching band and sang the National Anthem at sporting events. Her mother works in President Stanley’s office.
On Sept. 18, Shayna Stahl accepted the position of Director of Athletic Bands at Stony Brook University, completing a nationwide search to replace longtime music director and founder of the Spirit of Stony Brook Marching Band, John J. Leddy, who retired last year.
