Stony Brook University’s Department of Music is hosting its annual Messiah Sing-Along this Sunday, Dec. 10, at 4 p.m. at the Staller Center. This tradition started in the late 1970s by a graduate student and an undergraduate student.
On Feb. 28, the Stony Brook University Department of Music hosted its annual one-hour family-friendly orchestra performance, featuring violinist Elvina Liu and conductor Susan Deaver, at the Staller Center.
On Nov. 15, Stony Brook University's Department of Music held an orchestra concert featuring pianist Yumito Torigoe and conductor Susan Deaver in celebration of Ralph Vaughan Williams' 150th birthday at the Staller Center for the Arts.
On Tuesday, Nov. 12, the Stony Brook University Orchestra performed renditions of Claude Debussy’s “Fetes” from “Trois Nocturnes” and Johannes Brahms’ “Symphony No. 2” led by conductor Susan Deaver at the Staller Center for the Arts. Winner of the 2019 Stony Brook University Undergraduate Concerto Competition, Thomas Lei, was the featured soloist and he performed Aram Khachaturian’s “Concerto for Flute and Orchestra” with the orchestra.
On Tuesday, May 2, the 70 students of the University Orchestra will combine their wide variety of talents with a range of instruments to produce a harmony of sounds first heard as early as the 17th century.
Susan Deaver had to go through many rehearsals, practices and auditions in order to get where is today and she proves that finding work in the arts after college can be done.
The University Orchestra is made up of a variety of students, including those still in high school, undergraduates and graduate students and is open to string, woodwind, brass and percussion players.
Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. as the lights dimmed at the Staller Center for the Arts, the University Orchestra’s conductor Susan Deaver led the group in the Music From Around the World performance that would soon captivate their audience.
