The Stony Brook softball program has a knack for turning relative unknowns into stars. After breaking out in year two, shortstop Kyra McFarland can be added to that list.
“We have unfinished business,” first baseman Lindsey Osmer said to The Statesman. “I’ve finished second in the America East twice now and that’s not good enough for me.”
The SBU softball team advanced to the title game of the 2021 America East Softball Championship, falling short of a ring to a familiar foe. The third-seeded Seawolves lost two games against No. 1 seed UMBC, who took home its second consecutive title.
After winning a three-game series against the Stony Brook softball team on May 7 and 8, the UMBC Retrievers are the America East regular season champions.
On Tuesday, May 4, the Stony Brook softball team took to Queens to play its final scheduled non-conference game this year against the St. John’s Red Storm.
This Saturday and Sunday, their struggles finally caught up to them when they were swept by the Albany Great Danes in a three-game road series; the Seawolves were outscored 11-3 despite outhitting Albany 21-17.
Graduate pitcher Melissa Rahrich is not one to be outdone. Rahrich tossed the Stony Brook softball team’s second straight one-hit shutout in a 2-0 home victory over the St. John’s Red Storm on April 20.
Eventually, SBU Softball’s experienced roster will regain its consistency. In the meantime, they have been following no-hitters and tournament sweeps with questionable losses like their 10-6 extra innings defeat at the Fordham Rams on March 30.
The Stony Brook Seawolves’ softball team already had the most feared rotation in the America East. Now, after their game with the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights, they might have the most feared batting lineup as well.
Playing four games in Harrisonburg, Virginia, the Stony Brook softball team was swept in a doubleheader by the James Madison Dukes on Friday, March 12 before sweeping the Rhode Island Rams on Saturday, March 13.
