Amidst an ongoing federal investigation into SBU’s handling of Title IX cases, many students are unfamiliar with the law and the method by which it investigates sexual harassment/violence claims.
The United States Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights is investigating Stony Brook University and 75 other colleges and universities for their handling of sexual violence cases.
In 2012, there were 17 cases of rape on the Stony Brook University campus. The following year, in July of 2013, the university hired Raúl M. Sánchez to serve as the senior director for the Title IX and Risk Management.
Last September, a new position was created within Stony Brook University’s Office of Diversity and Affirmative Action. Raúl M. Sánchez was appointed as Senior Director for Title IX and Risk Management in an effort to raise emphasis on issues related to Title IX, a federal statute that prohibits sexual discrimination in an educational setting.
