Stony Brook student Cautney Nelson starts nonprofit STEM education club

When Cautney Nelson, 23, first created her nonprofit Millennial Science in December 2018, she wanted to put a fun twist on making research articles more digestible for readers. Nelson soon switched gears to bringing Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) programs to children in low-income areas.

Tobacco legislation will not curtail smoking

In a close vote, Suffolk County voted to raise the age to purchase tobacco to 21. Currently, the age to purchase in Nassau County is 19, and the legal age to purchase tobacco will soon be going up to 21 in New York City. Lawmakers seem to believe banning substances is the proper step to stop teens from smoking, drinking and finding even stronger (and more dangerous) substances to use. However, it is clear through patterns we have seen in history, and even among friend groups, that the laws only promote crime and an illegal black market.

Tobacco-buying age limit increases in Suffolk County

Suffolk County legislators voted 10 to 8 to raise the legal tobacco-purchasing age from 19 to 21. This change will begin on Jan. 1 next year. This follows New York City’s decision in November to change its tobacco-purchasing law from 18 to 21, which will take effect in May.
