A magician performed a face changing performance. The performers wear masks of different colors usually depicting well known characters from the Sichuan Opera. One of the faces the magician depicted included a fire-breathing skit. The technique used to change masks has been a guarded secret which has been passed down traditionally from generation to generation within theater families. MANJU SHIVACHARAN/ THE STATESMAN
