Blood Equality Panel proves that rights are still not equal

This year, New York became the tenth of 15 states and the District of Columbia to legalize gay marriage. But in the United States, men who have sex with other men still cannot donate blood. On Nov. 6, Stony Brook University’s Blood Donor Equality movement presented “The Blood Donor Policy Panel” in the Charles B. Wang Center Theatre. The event highlighted both social and scientific perspectives on the ban.

Instagramming food is trending at SBU

A study by Ryan Elder and Jeff Larson from Brigham Young University suggests that scrolling through photographs of a specific food may make that type of food less satisfying. However, Stony Brook Campus Dining posts pictures of food, food related events and promotions on its social media accounts.

Keeping the dogs out

The university approved a new on-campus animal policy in July, Policy 620, which states that “Animals are prohibited from all University buildings, athletic facilities, and outdoor events, unless otherwise permitted by this or other University policy” according to the University Policy Manual.

Campus making strides to improve energy efficiency

Located between Circle Road and the Simons Center is a field of mud, a collection of strange-looking offices and a building that emits smoke. This area is dedicated to the Office of Sustainability’s Facilities and Services division, tasked with providing Stony Brook University with reliable power, installing sustainable technologies and initiatives and monitoring the campus’s consumption of energy. James O’Connor, the director of Sustainability & Transportation Operations, oversees this effort, making sure different divisions work together in this goal.

Residential Safety Program available as ever after campus robberies

On September 13, Chief of Police Robert J. Lenahan sent out a campus update to the Stony Brook University community regarding the robbery that took place on the evening of September 1 and the attempted robbery that took place two days later. In the first incident, a student was approached by two to three males who threatened the victim and took his phone and U.S. currency. In the second related incident, three students were approached by two males who displayed an Airsoft pistol and demanded money.
