In a lawsuit filed on Nov. 19, Atkinson claims she did not receive the “same institutional support as male coaches of men’s teams,” and that she was “micromanaged” in a way that “male and/or white coaches and coaches of men’s teams are not.”
Stony Brook Athletics announced the hiring of Kerry Smith Monday afternoon to fill the Swimming and Diving head coach vacancy. Smith is a former captain of the Penn State University Nittany Lions and assistant coach for Yale’s swimming and diving program.
At Wednesday’s Diversity Plan town hall, a panel of Stony Brook administrators and student representatives were asked to clarify the Athletic Department’s policies for investigating allegations of abuse.
The Stony Brook swimming and diving team failed to win an event in their second meet of the year at Sacred Heart as the program continues to develop in its return season.
While the drive is there to succeed, it is Atkinson’s job to push the newly-formed women’s swimming and diving team to a level they have never seen before.
What makes Adrianna Oliva unique among her peers is that she is a survivor of a brain tumor and, as of Thursday, is an official member of the Stony Brook swimming and diving team.
