What’s a Seawolf? Dean Jerrold L. Stein sure is.
After 38 years of hard work and dedication to Stony Brook University, Stein is retiring from the position of Associate Vice President of Student Affairs and Dean of Students, as announced in an email sent by President Stanley on Tuesday, April 22.
Undergraduate Student Government elections closed on Friday, officially establishing junior biology major Garry Lachhar as the next president of USG and making the $99.50 student activity fee mandatory for undergraduate students for the next two years.
Last year, the Undergraduate Student Government executive council candidates pledged to make several changes to improve campus life. The Statesman reexamined those platforms to see if those candidates upheld their promises.
Last year’s spring concert—newly renamed Brookfest—promised performances by Kendrick Lamar and Steve Aoki. However, both artists failed security checks by the Campus Police, who were worried about “slam dancing.” The resulting fallout from the artist change led to a vote of no confidence and near impeachment of then Undergraduate Student Government President Anna Lubitz.
With a clean sweep of executive council positions and only two seats challenged in the senate, the number of uncontested positions in this year’s Undergraduate Student Government election is unacceptable.
If I am not a gullible fool, and you are not a gullible fool, then why don’t rumors die out as quickly as they should? Stony Brook University is a hub of conversation where the line between “rumors” and “news” is so blurred that people will seem to believe anything upon hearsay. Perhaps, one of the most pressing rumors I have heard so far are the ones revolving around who will perform at this year’s Brookfest.
This semester, the Student Activities Board aims to follow the success of last spring’s concert—which featured rapper Ludacris and band Grouplove—with a bigger and better experience.
A focus on revising USG event policies and procedures was at the center of the latest Undergraduate Student Government senate meeting. USG focused on amending their legislation on event-related policy changes, including a new Appropriations act and a new Credential policy.
The Undergraduate Student Government Senate rejected a resolution supporting a new Friday bus route on Oct. 10 after senators repeatedly attempted to adjust its phrasing.
USG President Adil Hussain proposed the resolution, which would support an initiative USG has pursued since the summer. Though senators generally supported it, they disagreed on wording.
Heated remarks and impassioned debate dominated a series of budgeting decisions at the Oct. 10 Undergraduate Student Government Senate meeting. The senate fiercely contested changes to the student government’s annual budget, the recognition of one club and funding for another. One student publication nearly lost all of its funding.
