Turning Point USA has been officially recognized as an organization on campus, despite the Stony Brook Progressive Coalition’s online petition to bar the chapter from being recognized by the University.
Stony Brook University President Maurie McInnis confirmed the school’s commitment to renaming Sanger Hall in an Undergraduate Student Government (USG) Senate meeting on Nov. 11.
Over 200 people attended “Breaking Silence: A Public Forum on Anti-Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Racism” over Zoom on May 5, prompted by the national conversations around the increase in hate incidents against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.
2020 was a milestone year for racial unrest and protests. During the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement, one student at Stony Brook University made it their mission to show the racial unrest within the campus community.
Hosted by the Stony Brook Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and the Black Student Athlete Huddle, about 200 attendees and students came together to show support for the Black Lives Matter movement.
“As a campus community, we will lead with purpose to build a supportive culture with our shared value strategy embedded into our actions and operational practices,” Clarke said in the email.
The union argues that these guidelines stand as a direct contradiction to the university’s recent statements on the Black Lives Matter movement, and its declared commitment to black community members.
