Trying to bring fans back into the stands, Stony Brook Athletics has developed and launched a new app to help better connect themselves with almost 27,000 students. The app was launched during the second week of the semester on Monday, Aug. 29.
The Stony Brook athletics program is one made up of contradictions. Its athletes have taken home a slew of awards, but they play for a student body that is largely apathetic towards those accomplishments.
The America East Conference announced on Thursday, August 12 that Brad Walker, current vice president of the head of basketball operations for the National Basketball Association (NBA) G League, has been named the conference’s next commissioner.
On Friday, May 7, Ashley Langford was introduced as the new head coach of the Stony Brook women’s basketball team in a press conference at Island Federal Arena.
On Nov. 25, the men’s and women’s basketball teams will begin their season, marking the first official competition for a Stony Brook team since the NCAA halted all college sports in March.
The NCAA instituted a ban on in-person recruiting in March and has extended the ban on a monthly basis. Other subsequent rulings have left coaches and administrators trying to hit a moving target while they attempt to do their jobs.
The America East has postponed fall sports to the spring. Many other conferences have canceled their fall sports seasons as well, including the Patriot League, Ivy League and several Division II and Division III conferences
Stony Brook added their second FBS opponent, the Western Michigan Broncos, as their season opener now scheduled for Friday, Sept. 4 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. This match replaces their previously scheduled matchup against Fordham on Aug. 29.
Director of Athletics Shawn Heilbron encouraged athletes and coaches to speak out against racism and have uncomfortable conversations with each other on the subject in a statement released on Twitter.
