While the overall tone from the Stony Brook community was excitement when it was announced that Childish Gambino and Diplo would be the artists coming to the Brookfest Spring Concert on April 23, I noticed more than a few naysayers around campus critical of USG's selection of musical artists.
Last year’s spring concert—newly renamed Brookfest—promised performances by Kendrick Lamar and Steve Aoki. However, both artists failed security checks by the Campus Police, who were worried about “slam dancing.” The resulting fallout from the artist change led to a vote of no confidence and near impeachment of then Undergraduate Student Government President Anna Lubitz.
When spring hits Stony Brook, one question starts circulating around the campus: “who is performing for the spring concert?” So far this year, rumors have been bouncing around on social media sites, but it was not until today that the announcement was made official. Diplo and Childish Gambino will be coming to Stony Brook.
If I am not a gullible fool, and you are not a gullible fool, then why don’t rumors die out as quickly as they should? Stony Brook University is a hub of conversation where the line between “rumors” and “news” is so blurred that people will seem to believe anything upon hearsay. Perhaps, one of the most pressing rumors I have heard so far are the ones revolving around who will perform at this year’s Brookfest.
