The Stony Brook offense was red hot this weekend as they swept the Binghamton Bearcats in three games. The Seawolves, who are now 20-11 overall and 7-1 in America East play, had 37 hits on the weekend.
With dominating pitching performances carrying both teams, the Seawolves and Hartford split a doubleheader on Saturday. Only two runs were scored on the day, with the Hawks winning game one and Stony Brook taking game two.
Last Saturday’s 7-0 win against Albany was a momentous one for the Stony Brook baseball team—not just because it was the Seawolves’ first conference win of the season, but because righty hurler Frankie Vanderka no-hit the Great Danes. This was the third time the senior sociology major has thrown a no-hitter since his freshman season in 2011.
It has been a crazy two years for Stony Brook baseball. In 2012, a veteran team of Seawolves did the seemingly impossible by making it to the College World Series with the most wins in Division I baseball. In 2013, a much younger SBU team started off poorly, losing the first nine games, but battled back to end the season with a 15-15 conference record that secured the team a playoff berth.
Steve Pikiell cannot stop smiling on Media Day. In the ninth year of his Stony Brook career, Pikiell has a lot to be happy about. The head men’s basketball coach has overseen the program as it rose from “just hoping to not play the 8/9 game” to contending for a berth in the NCAA tournament. The Seawolves now have the support of the community, the administration and the student body. They have season ticket holders, sold-out games and a new arena coming next fall. It’s a complete turnaround from what things were like when Pikiell joined the program back in 2005.
After losing to St. John's at Citi Field on Tuesday, stellar pitching and a 20-hit day helped lift the baseball team to their first series win of the year this weekend.

The senior right-hander gave up five runs against the University of California, Los Angeles in the first inning of game one of the College World Series. Despite having several chances, the Seawolves could not overcome the start, and they fell to UCLA 9-1.
Senior starter Tyler Johnson (12-1) threw a complete game and earned his third win of the postseason as the Seawolves won the second game of the Super Regional, 3-1.
