Stony Brook will need to wait at least another year to see its first player ever selected in the NFL Draft. However, on Saturday, May 1, following the conclusion of the 2021 draft, three former Seawolves football players — safety Augie Contressa, defensive tackle Sam Kamara and defensive back TJ Morrison — signed contracts with NFL teams as undrafted free agents.
Draft Wire at USA Today editor Luke Easterling announced on Twitter that Contressa would be signing with the reigning Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Easterling praised Contressa as a “versatile defender,” adding that he has a good chance to “stick on special teams, and even push for that last safety spot.”
Contressa, a native of Commack, New York, earned second-team All-CAA honors in both the 2019 and 2020 seasons. He was named one of Stony Brook’s captains before his final season and recorded 212 tackles in 41 collegiate games. In 2019, Contressa led the Seawolves defense with 88 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks.
“Dreams to reality! Can’t wait to get to Tampa!” Contressa said on Instagram. “Thank you to everyone who was there since the beginning!!!”
Kamara signed with the Chicago Bears, reporting his destination himself by tweeting “Chicago here I come!” The transaction was further confirmed by NFL Network reporter Tom Pelissero. Kamara was named second-team All-CAA in 2018 and led the team with nine sacks, but his 2019 season ended after just five games due to a shoulder injury. He came back at full strength and was named first-team All-CAA after the 2020 season.
Hours later, Pelissero reported that Morrison had signed with the Las Vegas Raiders. Morrison, from Yonkers, New York, had started at cornerback alongside current member of the Seattle Seahawks and his Stepinac High School teammate Gavin Heslop. For the 2020 season, he was named a senior captain and moved to the safety position after being named to the Preseason All-CAA second team.
Contressa, Kamara and Morrison join Heslop on the Seahawks, tight end Connor Davis on the New York Jets and safety Chris Cooper of the Denver Broncos as the current Stony Brook Seawolves alumni on NFL rosters.
