Chinese New Year celebrated at Wang Center

2/10The Stony Brook Youth Group performed a traditional folk dance known as the Shu lai bao. The performance is a short, fast-rhyming talk show accompanied by bamboo clappers. MANJU SHIVACHARAN/THE STATESMAN

3/10A magician performed a face changing performance. The performers wear masks of different colors usually depicting well known characters from the Sichuan Opera. One of the faces the magician depicted included a fire-breathing skit. The technique used to change masks has been a guarded secret which has been passed down traditionally from generation to generation within theater families. MANJU SHIVACHARAN/ THE STATESMAN

4/10The Long Island Chinese Dance Group performed a dance to a song known as "Bamboo Under the Moonlight." The team consists of 14 members from many different backgrounds but share a passion for dance. MANJU SHIVACHARAN/ THE STATESMAN

5/10A dog trainer performed a show with his poodle, Hua Hua the Dancing Dog. Hua Hua exhibited multiple skits, including walking on two paws, and jumping through hoops the trainer held. MANJU SHIVACHARAN/ THE STATESMAN

6/10Students from the Harbor Country Day School sang numerous Mandarin nursery rhymes. Mandarin is offered to students from preschool through sixth grade at the school, located in Head of the Harbor. MANJU SHIVACHARAN/ THE STATESMAN

7/10The Song Island Performing Arts Group performed a drumming and dancing skit titled “Drumming to Spring.” Established in 2015, members are from Long Island and perform to share, honor and preserve the traditions of Chinese music, dance, and drumming. MANJU SHIVACHARAN/ THE STATESMAN

8/10Opera singer Lingyan Zhou performed a solo piece titled “A Glass of Beautiful Wine.” Her original songs, including "Hometown Beijing," are among the most recognized folk song hits, and are beloved throughout China. MANJU SHIVACHARAN/ THE STATESMAN

9/10Yingrou Zhao (left) and Zongchun Zhao performed a piece titled “Battle Horse Galloping” on the Erhu, a two-stringed, bowed musical instrument. The Erhu originates back to a group of instruments introduced to China more than a thousand years ago. MANJU SHIVACHARAN/ THE STATESMAN
