Seawolves Edge Sacred Heart

Stony Brook’s Women’s Basketball team defeated Sacred Heart at home this past Wednesday, winning by a score of 52-47. Seniors Aly Young and Dana Ferraro played crucial roles in the Seawolves’ victory, as each registered double-doubles, combining for 27 points and 23 rebounds.

Although the Seawolves finished on top, until midway through the second half neither team held a real advantage most of the game, mostly due to the poor shooting by Sacred Heart, and poor ball control by Stony Brook.

In the first half, Sacred Heart shot an abysmal 5-29 (17.2%) from the field, including going 1-7 (14.3%) from three point range. Stony Brook shot an impressive 8-18 (44.4%) from the field, and 8-9 (88.9 %) from the free throw line, however their Achilles Heel was their 14 turnovers going into the locker room. The turnover’s led to them taking 11 less shots than Sacred Heart and thus limited them from taking control of the game. The score after the first half was 24-19 in Stony Brook’s favor.

In the second half, Stony Brook did a much better job of controlling the ball, and never let go of their first half lead. The Seawolves cut down on their turnovers, accumulating only four turnovers in the last 16 minutes.

Stony Brook’s shooting did regress in the second half, as they shot only 8-29 (29.6%) from the field, however Sacred Heart shot an even worse 16-59 (27.1%) throughout the entire game, thus shooting wasn’t a factor in this game.

Coach Michelle Cherry described the game as ‘sloppy.’ She also mentioned ‘It’s important to protect home court, and that’s what we did.’ Their home victory improved their record to 2-1 and kept them undefeated at home.

Seawolves Dropped by Marist

Stony Brook’s Women’s Basketball team took on Marist this past Friday, and lost for the first time at home by a score of 65-54. Marist proved to be too much for the Seawolves early on, who were playing their fourth game in seven days, after taking a 36-16 lead after the first half. Marist then held around a 20 point lead most of the second half, until the Seawolves made a 16-6 run the last four minutes of the game.

Overall Stony Brook shot 33.9% from the field, compared to Marist who shot 42.9% from the field, including shooting 51.9% during the first half. The free throw department also killed Stony Brook as the Seawolves shot an abysmal 8-18 (44.4%) from the line while Marist shot an impressive 19-20 (95%) from the line through out the entire game including a perfect 14-14 in the second half.

Notable players for Stony Brook were Kairsten Nunn who scored a team-high 12 points and Dana Ferraro who led the team with 10 rebounds.

The next game for the Women’s Basketball team is the coming Saturday, Nov. 24, against the Manhattan Jaspers, in an away game.
